SAN ANTONIO
It is never difficult to find a quality game in San Antonio
The San Antonio area has some incredible golf opportunities along with some of Texas’ best tourist spots. Take a quick tour of The Alamo. Then mosey on down to the Riverwalk. The city comes alive at night along this famous stretch of the San Antonio River. But whatever you do, bring along the sticks because there’s no better place to be in Texas than on the 18th green at sunset at one of San Antonio’s finest links.
Aside from the historical sites and popular tourists’ spots, the place is also home to an array of challenging golf courses. From the championship layouts to the public and private courses, every golfer is given the finest options that will surely challenge various skill levels.
This historic 18-hole golf course, the first inductee into the Texas Golf Hall of Fame, was the original site of the PGA Winter Tour. Located near the heart of San Antonio in historic Brackenridge Park, this course is the oldest of the six municipal golf courses. It opened for play in 1916 as an 18-hole championship course.
The Texas Open Golf Tournament originated on this course in 1922 and was played here until 1959. The golf course closed January 2008 for renovations and re-opened in October 2008. Renovations include greens, tees, fairways and a layout which includes 15 of the original 18 holes previously designed by the renowned golf course designer, A.W. Tillinghast. Thirty new bunkers were added to the course. The renovated golf course measures 6,263 from the championship tees with a par of 71.
Cedar Creek is consistently rated one of the top muni courses in the USA. The hill country layout is challenging for all levels of play. Gold tees are available for scratch golfers. Some players feel that the narrow fairways allow the ball to roll to the center, but this is not evident to most players. Ride this one… it’s real hard to walk. Because of it’s popularity, the crowded course can play very slow. Go early or allow five hour rounds on really nice days. However, it’s so pretty and great to play it’s worth the time.
Horseshoe Bay Resort’s championship Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course, Apple Rock, was completed in 1986 and received distinction as “Best New Resort Course” by Golf Digest. Widely known as one of the most scenic courses in the state, this spectacular course spans 147 acres of the rolling Texas Hill Country along the shores of Lake LBJ. Apple Rock is situated in high, rocky terrain, offering stunning views of the lake and the Tif-Eagle Bermuda elevated greens are surrounded by 56 sand traps. Offering a dramatic elevation change are back-to-back par 5 holes No. 10 and No. 11 taking golfers from one of the highest points at Cap Rock down to the shores of Lake LBJ in just a few strokes.
Known as the “Challenger,” Ram Rock has narrow fairways and rolling Crenshaw Bentgrass greens which are surrounded by 62 deep bunkers, ten water hazards and natural dry creeks on six holes. With its dramatic elevation changes, Ram Rock offers enough length and difficulty to challenge scratch players in any group and features an especially demanding island green par 3 hole (No. 4).
Built in 1971, with multiple tees on every hole, more than 71 sand traps and 12 water hazards, Slick Rock embodies the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. philosophy of “hard par, easy bogey.” Slick Rock also is home to the awe-inspiring “Million Dollar Hole” (No. 14) featuring a winding cart path that takes golfers on a ride through a waterfall that spans more than 35 yards and empties more than 8,000 gallons of water into Slick Rock creek each minute.
Horseshoe Bay Resort’s most exclusive Members-Only course is known as the best new golf course in the United States (Ron Whitten of Golf Digest). It officially opened in October 2012 when Nicklaus himself, opened the course by playing a few holes in front of a large gallery. On the day, he played holes 10-13 shooting (-3) at the tender age of 72. The Nicklaus Signature course is some of the Golden Bear’s best work as the par 72 layout features scenic views and dramatic elevation changes.
The Palmer Course at La Cantera, at just under 7,000 yards in length, might be one of the best kept secrets in the United States. Designed by Arnold Parmer, this golf course was carved right out of the beautiful hill country on the northwest side of San Antonio. The golf course is fun for new players and a real challenge for even the best players. The clubhouse is a perfect place to unwind and relax after your round of golf, while the views looking down on the 9th and 18th green are spectacular.
The Resort Course is a beautiful layout, just over 7,000 yards in length from the championship tees, in the hill country on the northwest side of San Antonio, Texas. The Morrish/Weiskopf design offers spectacular views from beginning to end. Carved out of the rolling hills, this golf course is fun and challenging for all levels of golfers. Since 1995 the Resort course has offered locals and visitors a perfect place to play golf and relax.
Mission del Lago Golf Course is nestled along the shores of Mitchell Lake across the flat lands of San Antonio’s south side. The golf course has a traditional links-style layout, meaning trees are sparse and windy, wide open spaces are abundant. The challenging golf course features more than a hundred sand traps and water hazards come into play on 10 holes. There are also multi-tiered greens, most of which are fast and undulating, and dry creek beds coming into play that require keen short game skills and careful strategy. The gusty Texas winds are probably the most challenging factor, though. Mission del Lago Golf Course is tricky, but five sets of tees give players of all skill levels a chance to play.
We think you will find a round of golf with at the Quarry a unique, challenging and fun experience. To accommodate players of all skill levels we feature four sets of tee boxes on each hole.
The front and back nines play very, very differently. The front nine is links styled like you might see in Scotland or Ireland. It features rolling hills, large, expansive bunkers and sloping greens. Holes of note are the long par four number 2 named “Rails”, the dog leg left par five 5th hole named “Watery Grave”, and the par three 8th hole where you hit to the green from a highly elevated tee box.
The back nine is where we get our name, The Quarry. 100 years ago it was an active, busy, limestone rock quarry pit providing stone for a growing San Antonio area. Today it is beautifully maintained 9 holes of golf for all of you to enjoy. Holes of note on the back nine are number 10, a long par four that for most players is difficult to reach in two, along with numbers 13 and 17 where your tee shots soar above the deep quarry pit below you. Those holes are appropriately named “Escape from Alcatraz” and “Reload”.
Due to the differing topography, the Pete Dye-designed AT&T Canyons Course, paired with Norman’s AT&T Oaks Course complement one another with each having a unique look, feel and playing experience for Members and resort guests. While very different from the traditional, tree-lined Oaks Course, the Canyons Course stands on its own as a tournament venue in terms of design, strategy and beauty. The course plays host to the Champions Tour’s San Antonio Championship.
The AT&T Oaks Course, designed by PGA TOUR legend Greg Norman with player consultant Sergio Garcia, reflects the TOUR’s departure from the modern tournament style course (expansive grass areas and spectator mounding) to a more natural look and feel, without sacrificing the fan experience making it very tournament friendly. The AT&T Oaks Courses plays host to the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open.
Opened in 1923, Willow Springs G.C. is the oldest golf course in San Antonio. The course has hosted several Texas Opens and many local amateur tournaments over the years and has been enjoyed by several famous golfers including Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. By today’s standards Willow Springs Golf Course might seem pretty straightforward, but do not be fooled. The course’s par-5 second hole is the longest in the entire city at 663 yards. There are also long, open fairways and a variety of elevation changes throughout the golf course. The popular Willow Springs course is located in eastern San Antonio, only about a 10-minute drive from San Antonio’s famous Riverwalk.
