PGA NATIONAL RESORT & SPA
West Palm Beach, Here i come
Home to the PGA Tour’s annual Honda Classic, PGA National Resort & Spa is the legendary site of premier golf events which have showcased the skills of some of the biggest names in golf. The resort has been host to more professional tournaments than any other resort in the country including the 25th Ryder Cup, the 69th PGA Championship and close to two decades of the PGA Seniors’ Championship. The resort boasts five 18-hole, master-designed golf courses; full service, professional tournament staff; a comprehensive caddie program and the PGA National Golf Academy featuring The Dave Pelz Scoring Game School and The David Leadbetter Golf Academy. The property recently completed a resort-wide $65 million transformation including a beautiful new entrance and lobby, lush new resort pool, the addition of iBar, the new Ironwood Grille restaurant and pool-side Honda Pavilion as well as extensive golf course upgrades. The multi-million dollar investment also delivered expanded meeting space and a complete restoration of all 23 meeting rooms.
The Champion is currently the home of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic, benefiting the Nicklaus Children’s Healthcare Foundation (and an integral part of the Fedex Cup) and has been the site of the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship and the PGA Seniors’ Championships from 1982 to 2000. The Champion is a “must play” stop on any avid golfer’s list and is included in the “Top 100” resort course rankings of several golf publications.
The Estate originally opened in 1984 as Stonewall Golf Club, and has been part of PGA National since 1988. The course, a short drive from the resort, is distinguished by its classic Florida landscape. Golfers find a masterful mixture of sand and water, while playing on lush green fairways and greens which wind through open meadows lined with Florida Pines and subtropical foliage.
The Haig was the first course opened for play at PGA National Resort in 1980. The course was designed from the ground up to provide quality golf for all types of players. In fact, careful study reveals there are no crossing water hazards, so golfers always have the option of playing around rather than over – or through – a water hazard. The 9th and 18th holes return to the Clubhouse area, facilitating 9-hole play from the 1st and 10th tees.
Designed by Arnold Palmer, the Palmer Course at PGA National Resort & Spa is the most forgiving for the “grip it and rip it” style of play. The open fairways and larger greens at this Palm Beach County golf resort course are quite accommodating, and the golfer is not overly penalized for missing the fairway or primary rough. There is a considerable amount of fairway mounding throughout the course, so the golfer is often challenged with uneven lies. The Palmer has a great series of finishing holes — with the 18th hole being one of the most difficult and picturesque par 5s on the property.
Tom and George Fazio refer to The Squire as “the thinking man’s course,” requiring golfers to test their accuracy with fairway woods and/or long irons off many tees and precise short iron shots into the greens. The links layout is the shortest yardage (it’s only 6,478 yards from the back tees), but plays the narrowest of the PGA National courses.
